Choosing a printer

Generally, when you are looking for an HP photosmart printer, here are a few pointers.

  • Look for the type of ink that is used. Dyes tend to be more brilliant and faster, but may fade over time. Pigments generally last longer.
  • How many different colors does it use? You’ll find photo printers using 4, 6, or 8 different ink colors. More colors sound better, but some great quality printers have only 6 colors. The quality of the ink and size of each droplet of ink are characteristics you’ll find more important.
  • When looking at resolution, or dots per inch (dpi), you really don’t need greater than 1440 dpi. Anything greater than that uses more ink than necessary. To show yourself this is true, try printing at resolutions of 1440 and 2880 and see how your photos show up.

One final tip: If you’re shopping for an HP Photosmart printer, or a different photo printer, go into the store and try them out. You can print the same photo on several different printers in the store and see which give you the optimal photo quality.
