"Kobe plays better, as Jordan did, under pressure. He's a seconds left, hanging with Fisher and Horry clutch shot kind of guy."

Kobe Bryant is an interesting and controversial fellow. I've followed his and Shaq's story and basketball for some time now. Because he continues to arouse significant interest, I thought I'd get to know him in more detail by writing this short Kobe Bryant Biography.

Right now, it's the beginning of the 2004-2005 NBA season, but we'd have to guess it's only the middle portion of the basketball career part of this Kobe Bryant biography.

Kobe came into the NBA in 1996 right out of high school, one of the first players to do so, amid some naysaying that it was too soon, that it was a mistake. All you have to do to find out if they were right about that is ask yourself: when did he win his first championship? At the end of his 4th season in 2000, aged 22 years old. Kobe and Shaq (and the rest of the lakers!) won 3 NBA championships in a row. Was that the highlight of the Kobe Bryant biography?

You have to wonder. He went through heck in the 2003-4 season what with the collapse of the Fantastic Four Kobe Shaq Malone Payton Dream Team, the accusations of rape by whatshername in Denver, and the Shaq vs Kobe/Kobe vs Shaq, Shaq-trade-to-miami hoopla. But we learned something about Kobe through all this...

Central to any Kobe Bryant biography would have to be the understanding that Kobe, much like Michael Jordan, plays better under pressure. He's a 2nd and 4th quarter kind of guy. He's a seconds ticking down, hanging out with Derek Fisher and Robert Horry clutch shot kind of guy. He'd come back from all day at a hearing in Denver, flying both ways, make it to the game at the last minute or mid first quarter and play even better than usual.

Kobe the champion, Kobe the perseverant, Kobe the clutch shooter... Kobe the walking highlight reel. Want to see a few incredible shots? This is the highlight portion of my Kobe Bryant biography. To save you some time, since there are about 7,000 highlights there, check out two of my favorites: the 2003 behind the back move and slam dunk and a huge 360 from 1999.

Some other highlights of this Kobe Bryant biography include:

  • USA Today high school player of the year as as senior
  • Youngest (19yo) All Star in NBA history, 1998
  • Won the All Star weekened Slam Dunk contest as a rookie
