Small Dog Collar

It can be difficult for an owner of a small dog to find a small dog collar just the right size; however, because the need is great, manufacturers are now filling that need with specialized collars and other supplies for small dogs.

A small dog collar right for your pup

There are many different collars to choose from. Just because your dog is tiny doesn’t mean you won’t find a small dog collar that will fit your pup just right. Some collars come in sizes such as ¾” collars, 1” collars, 1.5” collars and 2” in collars. A small dog collar of ¾” will probably fit dogs like pugs, Shi-Tsus and Italian Greyhounds. “Adjust the collar so that, when pulled, the metal sliders are about 1 inch apart. When loose the collar should easily slip onto your dog’s head but be slightly difficult to slip off,” says Greyhounds Apparel.

What about a small dog collar with less “choke?”

Some collars are very uncomfortable, causing a choking sensation on dogs. This can cause them to cough and feel out of sorts. Although this problem may be more associated with large dogs, it can still occur if the small dog collar you purchase is too small or too tight. A martingale collar can limit the choke feeling that dogs experience with collars. These collars provide a more even pressure on the dog’s neck, without putting pressure on the dog’s throat, causing it to cough and choke.

A small dog collar of this type is perfect for the dog that tends to slip his head out of the collar. These collars are easy to adjust so that they fit well and when your dog pulls, it won’t loosen the collar and fall off. Yet, it won’t choke him either.

The variety of fancy small dog collar fashions is hot!

The selection of fancy small dog collar fashions is incredible. You can choose from rhinestone collars to luxurious leather collars, as well as personalized and electronic collars. All types of cool designs and easy to care for small dog collar fashions are what dog owners are interested in. They want a good selection to choose from, especially a small dog collar that’s comfortable and long lasting.

Will it be hard for my dog to adjust to its small dog collar?

There’s always an adjustment period for dogs and collars. Special training classes are available if your dog is having difficultly adjusting to its small dog collar.

If you’re purchasing an electronic collar for your dog so that it won’t leave the property, you will need to feel comfortable about your dog’s collar as much as your dog will need to feel comfortable wearing it. Again, be sure you select a collar that won’t slip off.

Keep in mind that small dog collar chain varieties are especially made to prevent your dog from lunging or pulling forward hard on the leash. No matter what type of collar you choose, be prepared for your dog’s reaction to it. It may try to use its back paw to slip it off. Also, be careful not to buy a collar that’s too big and that gets caught on everything around you, like low hanging branches and other lose items around the house.
