Brian Carter, acupuncturist, herbalist, and author

Brian B. Carter, MS, LAc
Founder, PulseMed.org

Why in the world would I need Brian's help?

Brian is the founder of the Pulse of Oriental Medicine. He teaches at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and maintains a private practice in San Diego, California, and is the author of Powerful Body, Peaceful Mind: How to Heal Yourself with Foods, Herbs, and Acupressure.

Why in the world do you need my help?

You might not. It's not for everyone. Some people will take the free articles I've written, my book, Powerful Body, Peaceful Mind, my Teleseminars, and the mp3 downloads and go on to achieve independent wellness success.

Some people don't like asking questions, don't want help, or feel too vulnerable admitting they need help. That's fine. I understand that. It's not good, but I understand it.

Some of you know you need help, and you care more about improving your life you're your pride.

  • Could you use some encouragement and guidance?
  • Someone to answer your questions?
  • Someone to help you find the right questions?
  • Do you want to make sure you don't just trail off, peter out, and give up?
  • Do you feel overwhelmed when you think about getting started?
  • Have you made some progress but now are totally stuck?

I can help. I provide these services as needed:

  • Personalized Body-Mind-Emotion Assessment
  • Personalized Food Recommendations for healing and balance
  • Personalized Help with giving yourself Acupressure
  • Personalized Answers and Suggestions for Herbal Healing
  • Personalized Exercise and Lifestyle Advice and Feedback

Did Someone Say 'Personalized'?

Personalization is fundamental to Chinese medicine's assessments and suggestions. That's the way all advice and medicine should be! You are unique, and your answers should be, too. Duh!

Who Needs Coaching and Mentorship?

As I'll demonstrate below, people at all stages need coaching and mentorship.

You Need Positive Influences

It's important to understand that most of us are more easily influenced than we like to admit. Peer pressure. You know all about it. Tell me you haven't eaten the wrong things, shirked on sleep, overworked, or laid around all day just because the other person you were with was doing that, too.

Stop the Sickness

And what if everyone in your life is unhealthy? How can you carve out an island of sanity and create a barrier from the sickness? You can't do it alone. Just call me Mr. Positive. But don't get the wrong idea - I call it like it is. If you or other people in your life are screwing up, I'm not going to candy coat it. Just call me the Dr. Phil of alternative medicine.

Get out of Bed

What if you live alone, and you can't get out of bed or off the couch? One self-employed man I worked with was trying to get his business of the ground. He felt good and was very constructive after I talked to him on the phone. It just took a little confrontation and encouragement from me. But the next day, he'd be in the same spot. I told him, "I'm going to call you every day for a week, just to make sure you're out of bed and making progress." Our talks made a difference for him, and he was able to get some forward momentum going that didn't end when he went to bed.

But not everyone needs such basic help.

Deep, Positive Improvements

Some people have some their "life stuff" in order, but need help making it to the next level. For example, another client of mine had a great job and plenty of money, but drank too much and had a manipulative live-in girlfriend. It took several hours a few times a week for several months to not only get him to see the personal and spiritual roots of his problems, but to help him make a fulfilling change.

I'm a firm believer that in the same way that nature abhors a vacuum, it's impossible to just stop doing the wrong things without substituting the right things. It wouldn't have been enough for him to stop drinking and start watching TV. He needed to stop drinking, re-examine his whole life history, get involved with more positive people, and begin a meaningful spiritual walk.

Fatal Attraction

It was about six months before it became clear that his girlfriend was trying to undermine his progress. In fact, she went batty when he got more positive. This isn't uncommon - when people aren't well, they choose unwell people. When one person gets well, the other person tries to drag them back down. It was making him miserable and it only got worse. I can't tell you how many hours of coaching it took to help him see that it was better for both of them to separate. In fact, months later the ex-girlfriend had made positive changes in her life as well. Your growth can help others and plant seeds for some future harvest.

Plateaus and Complacency

Some of you are bona fide personal growth successes. You've made amazing changes in your life. Congratulations! You have the trappings of success. People look up to you. You're one of the 'well ones'.

But you're not out of danger. We never are. We are in danger of complacency, also known as sloth. When it seems easy to amaze and please others, we stop giving our best. We relax too much.

What's worse, if you're the healthiest, sanest person you know, chances are you aren't sharing your insides with anyone. Who's going to see when you veer in the wrong direction? Who's going to tell you they don't believe your hype? Who's going to see through even your own lies to yourself?

This is a particular problem for authors, teachers, and coaches. Guilty! But I have several mentors I discuss things with, and when things are weird or going wrong, they give me perspective. Usually, I don't need much- just a hint, and I can figure it out.

And sometimes it's just the process of saying it to someone who I know is listening and understands - I can hear myself better and get to the truth. And every new area I've gotten into, whether spirituality, service, Chinese medicine, public speaking, writing, Christianity, or medical science, I've been able to find a mentor who helps me and enjoys our interactions as much as I do.

So we're never too well to have a mentor. In fact, those who think they're beyond this kind of thing invariably are stuck in fear or pride, and there they remain, fooling themselves and almost no one else.

Coach, Mentor, Helper, Life Consultant, Whatevah

I don't like any of those words. Coach? No, we're not going out to play baseball. Mentor? No, we won't be hanging out in the library. Helper? No. Life Consultant? Give me a break!

Anyway, it doesn't matter what you call me- call me Brian. You're the focus of the relationship, not me.

:-)

How much does it cost?

As with any purchase, you must consider both your return on investment and your cash flow. And what it's going to cost depends on what you need. And I have no idea what you need yet. So, I have a handy Assessment tool for you to use. After I've reviewed your responses, we schedule a 30-minute consult so I can get acquainted with you, ask questions, and discover your goals. I let that sink in, then create a Plan of Action with which we can proceed. I charge $20 to assess the Assessment, $40 for the Phone Consult, and $40 for the Plan. These three must all be paid before I'll consider your Assessment.

Why do I charge for the Wellness Assessment?

For two reasons: First, I have to charge for my time so that I can keep providing everyone with all this help, and number two, I only have so much time, so I want to be sure I'm dealing with people who are serious. If you can afford this kind of personal help, it should be no problem.

What's in the plan?

Based on your situation, needs, and goals, I'll tell you which of my services will help you, what other resources you might need to use, and give you a plan for how and in what order to do it all.

Resources mean:

  • If, for example, you really need acupuncture, I'll help you find the best acupuncturist for you in your area.
  • If you need group support, I can help you find that in your area as well.
  • If there are books you need to read and digest and integrate into your life, I can identify which ones.
  • (This is in addition to the services I provide)

Return on Investment and Cash Flow - Giving to Get

Sometimes people like the guy who couldn't get out of bed appear to be stymied by cash flow issues. "I can't afford to get help right now because I'm not working enough," goes the reasoning. However, Mr. Stuck wasn't going to be working more until he got my help. Thank goodness for credit cards! Sometimes we have to make an investment in ourselves so that we will be more valuable to ourselves in the future.

I can't help everyone. I wish I could.

If you have serious emotional or mental difficulties, you may need professional psychiatric help, and I'd urge you to get it. If you cannot afford my personalized help, believe me, I feel for you. I'm the kind of person who has had to learn to charge for my services, because my inclination really is to give everything away for free. Witness the hundreds of free articles I provide on PulseMed.org!

But getting married and getting a mortgage has helped me apprehend that we must put our oxygen masks on first, and that only by earning money can I put money into the kinds of free services that will eventually help you. So, I suggest you continue to read the Pulse, the free email newsletter, and watch for more free quizzes and tools. And in the meantime, do whatever baby steps you can to move forward. My prayers are with you!
