What makes a good demonstrative speech topic? It has to be a subject that involves a process. Why?

Because you have to demonstrate it! So you're going to answer a "how to" question. Of course, the more common a process this is, the better, because your audience will listen, but if they've all done it before, they'll start yawning.

And, it must be something you've done a bunch of times. So you know how to do it, but you may be surprised that when you break it down into parts of a process, it's a little clunky. You'll probably find out it's more complicated than you thought.

  • how to braid someones hair
  • proper stances for sports
  • how make a taco
  • clever ways to wrap gifts
  • how to pack for a trip
  • how to swing a golf club or bat properly
  • how to shoot a basketball properly
  • how to make a dangerous turn on a bicycle on a busy street
  • block in football
  • make pico de gallo
  • conduct yourself in an interview
  • make an orange julius
  • make pizza wraps
  • dance the merengue
  • make an origami crane
  • make rice krispy treats
  • decorate a cake
  • make an origami shirt
  • make rosebud kisses
  • do the Heimlich maneuver
  • make Spanish rice
  • draw easy cartoons
  • operate a paintball gun
  • make a Chinese chicken salad
  • make Easter baskets
  • play basic guitar chords
  • make a flower out of ribbon
  • play blackjack
  • make frappacinos properly
  • read vehicle invoice prices
  • rehabilitate a shoulder injury
  • troubleshoot computer problems
  • walk on crutches
  • make cookies

Then, you're probably going to have to use props and visual aids. Simplify the process to a few steps and put them on a handout. Make sure you've chosen a demonstrative speech topic that it practical for the room where you'll be demonstrating. For example, "how to light M-80 firecrackers" performed in a small room is probably not going to work out well for you grade-wise. Nor is it all that complicated or illuminating.
